Dear Friends:
It strikes me as interesting how the ideas of the most creative people in the church tend to challenge me in my ministry (for good and bad). But, it is not just me. Creativity challenges many of a church congregation. For some, it is the fact that creativity brings about, at least, the possibility of change. For others, creativity seems to threaten their positions of leadership and power. Many of us are just afraid or uncomfortable with change, even when that change holds the potential for making things somehow better.
The more creative idea, the scarier it appears and the more uncomfortable members (and at times Pastors) seem to become. And for me, the more creative the idea, the more, CHALLENGING IT IS FOR ME TO KEEP EVERYONE HAPPY AND CALM. In spite of this, creativity is what moves the ministry, of worship, devotional life and fellowship of a church forward.
Creativity is a good thing and has brought many of a congregation a lot of joy and new ministries. My position then is that creativity as long as it is consistent with our faith should always have a place in a church and its ministry as long as we do not forget our tradition.
Pastor Hopkins
P.S. I would love to hear what you think of creativity in a church?
